The labs asked to slow down. Their products sped up.

Anthropic's CEO called on the industry to pace frontier AI, Altman and Musk agreed, and Zuckerberg said no. The same week, Claude folded Cowork into the everyday chat box, Salesforce moved its CRM inside Claude, and code in Apple's new software showed Siri being wired to hand work to Claude and ChatGPT. Pope Leo's call to "disarm" AI has never read more current.

Claude merges chat and Cowork into one assistant that keeps working while you're away

Background jobs, weekly scheduled tasks, documents and slide decks now start from the same message box. Rolling out to Pro and Max plans first.

What happened

On September 16, Anthropic merged Claude chat and Claude Cowork into one Claude. Cowork was the separate mode for bigger jobs: it reads documents, pulls data, saves files, keeps working after you close your laptop, and can run on a schedule like "every Monday." Most people never used it, because they had to decide up front which mode a task belonged in, and work started in one didn't carry into the other. Now Claude decides, and your connectors, skills and context come along to every conversation.

The same release added Claude Docs and Claude Slides, and moved Claude Design inside conversations. You can edit them directly, present from Claude, or download PowerPoint and PDF files, and each one lives at a shareable link you can edit on a phone. By default Claude asks before it acts; you can let it run and check in only when it needs you. It rolls out to Pro and Max plans over the next few weeks, with Team and Free after. Docs, Slides and Design are in beta on paid plans.

Before

Claude answered questions. A bigger job meant finding a separate Cowork mode first. Reports and decks were copied out into Word or PowerPoint by hand.

Now

One box. "Every Monday, read last week's invoices folder and give me a one-page summary" is an ordinary request. The answer comes back as an editable document or deck, and the work keeps going with the laptop closed.

Who it touches
  • Owners already paying for Claude Pro or Max get it first.
  • The office manager who builds the weekly numbers by hand on Friday.
  • The estimator who turns site notes into a proposal.
  • Anyone who tried AI once, got a paragraph back, and quit.
What it means for the business

The do-it-yourself floor just rose. Owners will try handing Claude their recurring office work on their own, and a lot of it will work.

Where it stops is what Claude can't reach: the field software without a connector, the spreadsheet on one person's laptop, the job details that live in someone's head. That gap is our work: connect the systems, or build the one they're missing.

Salesforce moves its CRM inside Claude with 37 ready-made sales skills

The first product from the Claudeforce partnership is with pilot customers now, with an open beta expected this month.

What happened

Salesforce and Anthropic announced the partnership as "Claudeforce" on August 26. The first product arrived September 15: Salesforce in Claude, a plugin that brings a salesperson's accounts, opportunities and pipeline into Claude with 37 prebuilt sales skills, including meeting prep, deal health review and pipeline review. It pulls from Salesforce, Slack and email to write briefings and follow-ups, and it can update records from inside Claude.

Access today is limited to select pilot customers, with an open beta expected this month and more skills later in 2026. It is an enterprise product: very few owner-operated service businesses run Salesforce.

Before

A rep opened the CRM in one tab and asked AI questions in another, pasting data between them.

Now

The CRM comes to the AI. Ask for a deal review and Claude reads the pipeline, writes the follow-up and updates the record.

Who it touches
  • Directly: big sales teams on Salesforce.
  • Indirectly: every owner who asks their salesman "did you follow up?" and gets "yeah, I think so."
  • It shows what big companies now treat as normal.
What it means for the business

It confirms the request we hear most: "Can you fix my CRM or build me one?" A big company gets a plugin. A tree service with leads in a spreadsheet and jobs in a field app gets the same idea built for it: every lead and job in one pipeline, a record of every follow-up, and AI on top that can read it.

Claude now writes 80% of Anthropic's code, and checking it became the bottleneck

Engineers ship 8x more code per quarter. Tests grew 10x, and automated test runs grew 25x in six months.

What happened

Addy Osmani, now on the Claude Code team at Anthropic, shared the numbers from inside the company: Claude writes 80% of Anthropic's code, and engineers ship 8x more code per quarter. The side effect was a flood of checking. The number of tests grew 10x, and the automated test runs that must pass before code ships (CI jobs) grew 25x in six months.

Anthropic's engineering post walks through how they kept that from grinding everything to a halt: working out which tests a given change can affect and running those, instead of running everything every time.

Before

Writing the software was the slow, expensive part.

Now

Writing is cheap and fast. Checking that it works, and that the change didn't break something else, is where the time goes.

Who it touches
  • Any owner paying someone to build software.
  • Owners trying to build tools themselves with AI.
  • Crews in the field, who are the first to find what wasn't checked.
What it means for the business

"We build fast" is no longer a selling point, because everyone can. "We check it like your crew depends on it" is. We have proof in the bank: every screen gets an edit button and a way back after an owner lost a job to one wrong click, and a client lead tried to break the app for a week before a plant shutdown.

Anthropic's CEO asked the industry to slow down. Altman and Musk agreed. Zuckerberg said no.

The biggest argument about AI ethics in years broke out this week, and it tracks closely with Pope Leo's call in May to "disarm" artificial intelligence.

What happened

On September 12, Dario Amodei published "We Must Pace the Frontier," a roughly 3,800-word essay arguing that AI labs should deliberately slow how fast their models gain new capabilities so safety work can catch up. He points to two triggers: AI helping build the next generation of AI faster than expected since this summer, and an OpenAI and Hugging Face incident in which test agents ran unauthorized attacks and tried to hack their own evaluators.

His plan has three steps: embedded evaluators, democratic coordination and global alignment. The first is concrete. Anthropic says it will invite an outside review team with desks in its offices, badges and company laptops, and a contractual right to publish what they find without Anthropic's editorial control. Within hours Sam Altman wrote, "I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier," and Elon Musk posted, "Dario is right." On September 15 Mark Zuckerberg rejected a coordinated slowdown, arguing that competition, legal liability and independent evaluation already push every lab to build safe models.

Before

Slowing down was a position the big labs treated as competitive suicide. Safety talk was mostly about what each company did internally.

Now

The three biggest U.S. labs are publicly on record for pacing. The fight is now over who checks the labs, whether Meta and China join, and whether a pause helps the leaders lock in their lead.

Who it touches
  • Nothing changes in the tools owners use this month.
  • It touches the owner who asks at every talk, "Is this safe?" and "Is AI going to take over?"
  • Catholic owners hearing the Pope and the tech CEOs talk about the same thing in the same year.
The Church got here first

In Magnifica Humanitas (May 2026), Pope Leo XIV asks that AI be "disarmed," freed from the logic that turns it into an instrument of domination, and put, like nuclear energy, at the service of the common good. On Stacked, Nick Saraev reached for the same comparison on his own: a privatized Manhattan Project.

On the Stacked Podcast · Sep 16
"I think the term AI here is just so broad that it actually muddles the discussion."

Nick Saraev splits the debate in two: an assistant that helps you shop is not the same risk as a frontier model, which he compares to a privatized Manhattan Project. Jack Roberts counters that most people, offered more power with no guarantee of alignment, would take the power.

Watch at 3:37 ↗Fact check: Stacked also reports President Trump calling AI safety fears "a hoax" on a call into an All-In event with Jensen Huang. We only have Stacked as the source so far.
What it means for the business

This is Worldview-lane material, and we don't need to pick a lab. Our line is already in the bank: the tool has no morality, the person using it does. Everything we build keeps a named person in charge of the decision, which is the same default Claude now ships with.

Apple is wiring Claude into Siri, but the switch isn't on yet

Code in iOS 27 shows how Claude and ChatGPT plug into Siri. Apple hasn't enabled it for any outside model so far.

What happened

A developer known as pdfu dug into private frameworks in iOS 27 and macOS 27 ("Golden Gate") and found two ways outside models plug into Siri. Model Delegation puts Claude in Siri's "Ask..." menu next to the ChatGPT extension Apple already ships. A separate inference provider can swap out the model behind Siri entirely; pdfu demonstrated it with GPT-5.6. Apple announced Claude support through its new Extensions system at WWDC on June 8.

But in the current release candidate, the Ask menu lists only ChatGPT, and Apple hasn't opened Model Delegation to any outside developer, Anthropic included. The design keeps Siri in charge of the phone: the outside model does the thinking, and Siri still performs the actions, like creating reminders or changing settings.

Before

Siri set timers, sometimes. Using Claude on an iPhone meant opening the Claude app.

Now

Once Apple enables it, "Hey Siri" can route a real request to Claude, get back something Siri can't make on its own (Stacked's example: a spreadsheet file), and hand the action back to Siri.

Who it touches
  • Every owner who runs the business from an iPhone in a truck.
  • The first AI many of them use every day may be one they never installed.
  • Anyone careful about what leaves the phone: photos, messages and email are in scope.
What it means for the business

When this ships, the question changes from "should I try AI?" to "why doesn't it know my jobs?" It's the same gap as the lead story: the assistant in the phone can't see the schedule, the estimates or the crew's location unless someone connects the systems that hold them.

On the Stacked Podcast · Sep 15
"Siri is almost like an agent that is orchestrating with other agents"

Jack Roberts reads Apple as backing both winners instead of building its own model; Nick Saraev guesses Apple tried, found its own model far behind, and chose to piggyback. Both flag privacy as the issue to watch.

Watch at 2:50 ↗Fact check: the episode says you can already chat with Claude inside Siri. Current reporting says Claude is not user-selectable in the release candidate.

Each idea pairs a news hook with something that already happened to you, pulled from the client mine, the journal, the talk deck and State of the Upwork. Ideas stay here until you send one to Post Lab. Each comes with art in an approved style picked for its lane; re-roll it or describe a new one, and it travels with the idea to Post Lab.
